Offline and Offsite Backup Tools and Tips
The 3-2-1 Rule.
When working with electronics such as computers, tablets, servers, and even your cell phone it is a good idea to have backups of data in case of a sudden loss of information or sudden shutdowns of the used device. The 3-2-1 rule can help mitigate lost or corrupted data:
3 – Make 3 separate copies of any important file. Have 1 as your primary backup and 2 more in reserve.
2 – Keep storage files on 2 different media types, such as USB drives, Cloud services, External hard drives, etc.
1 – Store 1 copy of your saved data offsite (Away from your workspace)
Methods to backup data:
Cloud Storage
There are many cloud storage services that can help keep your data safe and encrypted. If needed, you can access your files via cloud storage and retrieve them in a timely manner.
Internal Hard Disk Drives
Most computers and laptops come stock with built-in hard drives, and it is the primary location of files and data.
Removable Storage Devices
Removable storage devices typically refer to devices that can be connected to systems to save data and then removed. Once removed, the device can be stored in a safe place and is unlikely to be exploited if a malicious actor gains access to your system. Some types of removable storage are:
- USB Drives
- External Hard Drives
- Floppy Disks
- CD’s
- SD Cards
- Magnetic Tape
